Once upon a time a young mother bought some side-snapping fitted diapers for her baby. He wore them for many months before outgrowing them. Then his younger sister wore them for many more months, as did the next sister after that. By this time the diapers were quite worn. The mother was done having children, so she didn't need diapers anymore, but her friend had babies so she offered the diapers to her friend.
The friend was me. I was happy to have some side-snapping diapers because my little one had recently figured out how to open velcro, drop his diaper, and streak through the house. I didn't have a snap-press of my own yet (although I've recently ordered one!), so I wanted to find a way to keep these diapers around for a while. These threadbare diapers had a great design, but the outer fabric was literally falling apart, so I decided to give them a makeover.
(old diaper, new diaper!)Viola, I still have my side-snappers (and I kept the core of the diaper, which was working just fine) I just added new layers on the inside (powderdry) and outside (flannel) to restore the comfort of a new diaper.
I love them! And they'll last through another kid or two.

I am in awe of your natural frugality! Well done! It *almost* makes me want diapers to make over, myself. Until I remember my horrible track record with unfinished projects. ;)
Thanks to your persistant positive cloth diaper comments on my own blog, I made the switch. I have yet to blog about them, but I am sure planning on it. I really hope there is a learning curve though, because I'm still struggling with leaking. (Maybe I just need some good quality covers...ones that will contain that breastfed baby poo! Anyway, cute dipes, they look very cozy! I need to learn how to make my own.
cloth diapers don't have a learning curve so much as just not all babies are the same shape...different diaper brands will fit the same baby differently. I would recommend getting on diaperswappers.com or mothering.com or somewhere like that, and looking for other moms who have kids with your kiddo's shape, then find out what brands/styles worked for them.
Oh cool! When you make my dipes can you do it with the snaps? I think its a great idea for the larges and I don't really like the Velcro on the BG's. The snaps seem to last longer too.
yes carrie, I can. I ordered the snap press last week, so it should be here before christmas (it comes literally on the slow boat from china, so it'll be a month or two probably).
So, what is this powderdry thing I keep hearing about? I've never heard of it before and when I google it I just get a link to your blog. :)
Does it stretch? Where can you buy it?
I got powderdry via a co-op (yahoo groups). It IS stretchy. It is also very very thin. It works something like microfleece--wicking moisture away--but it's thinner and slightly textured. It doesn't pill up the way microfleece can.
I don't actually remember which co-op I got it from, but there are a bunch on yahoo groups, and I think you can find it via various diaper fabric retail shops too... I hope that's of some help!!
