For details on what on earth I am writing about, go read the intro to the series here, or you can read the whole series by clicking this.
Hubby and I met on a riverboat on the Mississippi River. I had my books and was seeking a Twainesque experience, Hubby had lost all his money at the tables...He saw my book and we started chatting about it and then about other things... I thought he was funny and I bought him lunch.
Who knew lunch would lead to this?!

How We Met--Treehuggers
Another installment in the "how we met" series...(if you don't know what that is, go here to see the first post...trust me this will make a lot more sense if you know the background! You can read the whole series by clicking here.)
Hubby was with a group of treehuggers who had handcuffed themselves to some old growth trees in protest of the loggers who wanted to cut them down.
I was working as a summer intern with the group who was sent out to try to mediate with said treehuggers...
At this point the person to whom he was telling the story--our new neighbors--became extremely interested and started asking details--which agency was I with, what kinds of trees, how big do they get anyway, how long does it take them to get that big...the story kinda fell apart because we couldn't answer all the questions!
The real irony is, if either one of us was going to be a handcuff-myself-to-a-tree sort of activist, it probably would have been me. ☺

How We Met--Yosemite
Another installment in the How We Met series (wherein Hubby makes up a new story on the spot every time someone asks how we met...)
(I have observed that the early stories always included Wolf, because we were telling them to people who knew that Hubby had been a single dad...now that we've been established for a while though, the stories are of the more traditional boy-meets-girl variety, without the complications of allowing for boy-has-a-three-year-old-son-when-he-meets-girl...)
Hubby was working as a summer ranger at Yosemite National Park. I was there with my then-boyfriend to do some rock climbing. Unfortunately my boyfriend fell and was knocked unconscious. Hubby was the nearest ranger, so he radioed for help and then stayed with me while we waited for the paramedics. He continued to stay with me as the paramedics attended to my boyfriend (who was ok, mostly just shaken up), and by the time we were all leaving he and I had hit it off so we exchanged email addresses so we could stay in touch...

How We Met--Guatemala
I haven't posted any of these in a while, but with romance in the air I figure it's a good time to post another one!
For those who are newer here, you can pop over to this post to learn how this all started...but the long and short of it is that whenever someone asks how we met, Hubby makes up a new story on the spot. Here is a recent one:
I was a sea kayaking instructor in Guatemala (how cool is that?! never mind that I've never been in a kayak and am more or less terrified of the notion!) He was there for a short study abroad trip, and really wanted to try sea kayaking. Unfortunately I was completely booked, and was not going to be able to fit him into the schedule before he had to return home. Fortunately, I decided he was cute and offered to give him a private lesson after hours. Unfortunately, when I was teaching him how to roll over he hit his head on a submerged rock and conked out. Fortunately, I saved his life and stayed by his side in the hospital, and the rest, of course, is history...

How We Met--really!
If you are not familiar with the 'how we met' series, you should go read here first.
So I've told a few stories about how we didn't meet...I thought maybe I'd finally share how we DID meet.
I was in my final quarter of school at Central Washington University. Most of my friends had graduated the previous spring, but not all my classes were available every term, so I had to hang around one more quarter to get them done. My roommate went home every weekend, leaving on Friday around lunchtime and returning Sunday night...so I had long and lonely weekends. I mostly spent them online, surfing around and wasting time. One night, in a fit of boredom, I decided to check out LDSsingles.com. It was not a free service, but they had a short free trial, so I signed up for that.
Hubby was a young single father, living in Utah, who didn't go to many social events because he wanted to be with his son. His dad (who is somewhat of a technophobe actually) had encouraged him to join LDSsingles as a way to meet people while still being home with little Wolf. Over the course of a year or so, Hubby met and went on dates with a lot of women in his area, but nothing was going anywhere. One night, seeing that he had met everyone on the site who lived within 100 miles of him, he decided to extend the search parameters to 1000 miles...and found me the same weekend I joined.
When I saw that I had a message (and no, he wasn't the only one), I went and looked at his profile. I confess that my initial thought was "it's a divorced guy with a kid, that's not what I'm looking for..." but he'd said hi so I figured the polite thing to do was respond. (For what it's worth, by the end of that weekend I'd had messages from some real freaks, and stopped responding to most of them...so if Hubby had waited one more week he might not have found me, or I might not have responded...) Truly we were a match made by God. Coincidence could never have pulled it off!
We chatted online periodically, and even on the phone a couple of times, but we were over 800 miles apart, I was starting my student teaching, and we both started dating other people...
Skip forward about 7 or 8 months, and one night in April we found ourselves chatting online asking each other for dating advice about our current relationships which were falling apart. Really! Within a couple of weeks I had the distinct feeling that this was the man I was going to marry. (Hubby says that he knew from the very beginning that if I ever agreed to marry him he'd be a very lucky man. ♥ ) Anyway, in late May I went to the temple and prayed about him, and had the distinct feeling that he should come visit, and that when he did I would know for sure one way or the other.
On June 20 he flew up for the weekend...

How We Met--Customs
Another 'how we met' story...
Hubby just told this story this week (to the mother of one of his high school friends...someone he hadn't talked to in years, and who would have no clue he was making it up as he went, heeheehee.)
Hubby was on his way home from a vacation in Vancouver, BC. He had bought some fruit while there, so got stopped at the border. (Whoops! Haven't we all done something like that though?!) He had never been stopped or searched before, so he was a little anxious about it all. I was working at the customs station, and we got to talking a little while they were inspecting his car...
Ok, so, this one is actually pretty plausible, in spite of being nowhere close to the truth. :-)

How We Met--Boy Scout Trip
Another installment in the 'how we met series'
(if you don't know what this is, go here)
Hubby was leader of the 11yo boy scouts in his area. One weekend he took them on a hike up the canyon--into National Forest area. I was working for the Park Service as a ranger, and I was the one in the little booth who took his entrance fee. Well, his check bounced, so he had to come back the next week to re-pay the fee, and he intentionally came to my booth so that he could ask me out...
Disclaimer: this approach would not really have worked in real life, because the entrance fee for that canyon is about $3. I don't think I would have agreed to go on a date with someone who bounced a check for $3!!!

How We Met--Peru
Here is another installment in the "How We Met" series:
Hubby was doing a special 2 week study abroad program in Peru. He had wanted to do somthing longer, but because he had a toddler son, and couldn't bring him to the backwoods where he was going, he had to settle for the short trip, and leave the little guy with grandma. I was there with the peace corp, and was one of the leaders for one of the projects his class was working on. We became friends, started writing emails, and when I got back to the states a few months later, we started dating...

How We Met--Library
When we met, Hubby was living in Utah (going to school) and I was living in Washington (also going to school). There was no logical reason for our paths to cross, ever.
We met online.
That's the truth.
However, it's not exciting enough, so we tell stories.
It started one day when we were engaged, and attending a church gathering where most of the folks were the age of Hubby's parents. We knew the internet story would probably freak them out, so when it came up that we'd been in separate states, the inevitable question came up "oh, so how did you meet?!" Hubby, being the fast-thinking mastermind that he is, made up a story on the spot. Since then, it has been our tradition that whenever someone asks how we met, I defer to him, and he makes up a new story, on the spot. Some of the stories have been a whole lot of fun, so I thought I would share them with the world!
Today, I share the one he told that first night...
I was a student/teacher in Washington, but I was in Utah attending a conference at the college where Hubby was a student. He was working as an intern in the library. I came into the library during a break, and asked him if he could show me where to find the books on dating. He intentionally took me to the wrong part of the library, indicated an empty shelf, and then said that all the books were checked out, but would I go out with him instead...
(other stories will follow, I promise!)
