On Cooking from Scratch

"When we traded homemaking for careers, we were implicitly promised economic independence and worldly influence. But a devil of a bargain it has turned out to be in terms of daily life. We gave up the aroma of warm bread rising, the measured pace of nurturing routines, the creative task of molding our families' tastes and zest for life; we received in exchange the minivan and the Lunchable. I consider it the great hoodwink of my generation."

~~Barbara Kingsolver, in "Animal Vegetable Miracle" pg 126

I love Barbara Kingsolver. I'm reading her "Poisonwood Bible" right now and I've read a couple of her "Bean Trees" books.

I love the taste of her words and the subtle tapestries she weaves with her characters. I feel like she has a great love for her characters, and yet is honest and intelligent with them.

I grew up with Bisquick pancakes. When I got married, I learned how to make them from scratch. In fact, I have learned how to make almost everything from scratch...including mixes!

By the way, I love your new picture up at the top. So beautiful!

I've never read that book, but I love this quote!! In my opinion, cooking and baking for family is a huge way to show love. Throwing a Lunchable in front of my kid would feel wrong somehow.

Having said that, I know that some people don't have a choice - they have to work and they just don't have time for home cooked meals. I feel blessed to have that opportunity available to me.

I love this quote from the book! Honestly, though, she is just so darn quotable. I never thought I would love this book as much as I do, but it is now on my list to buy.
