A general rule for living and working with children

"If I had to make a general rule for living and working with children, it might be this: be wary of saying or doing anything to a child that you would not do to another adult, whose good opinion and affection you valued."

Sigh. So easy to read, so hard to remember. I yelled at my kid today for taking so long to do a simple task and now I feel like I great big failure.

I'll try harder.

Love this quote! That is the way I treated the children at the school where I worked.

Now I have to find out more about John Holt.

I actually don't quite agree with this general rule. Mostly because children don't have the same knowledge base an an adult. Sometimes you have to teach things in a different way to a child. Of course, I do agree with being gentle, kind, patient and loving to your children!

The longer I've been a mama, the less concerned I get with trying to change behavior and the more concerned I am with doing what I want them to imitate.
