A long time ago I disabled anonymous comments on this blog because I find it annoying for someone to say something without telling who they are...I mean either own up to your comment or keep your mouth shut, you know? However not everyone has a google account, so some people (nice people) who wanted to comment were unable to do so. So a couple of weeks ago I switched the setting to allow anonymous comments, but just added a note saying that if you use that setting please indicate who you are.
I have never seen so much spam in my life. Fully half the comments I have gotten in the last two weeks has been spam (some of it isn't even in English, good grief!). No way is this going to continue.
So I have essentially two options: return to the "no anonymous comments" setting, or activate the word verification. Now I really hate word verification--I just think it's a pain--so I've never had it and never wanted to have it...however maybe it's the lesser of two evils in this case. I don't know. What do you think?
There is a name/url option, would that work for people? I'm able to leave comments on blogs like word press from this sort of deal. Otherwise, I don't find the word thing that much of a pain, I've done it for other blogs.
ReplyDeleteThat is exactly why I have word verification
ReplyDeleteWow, that's really terrible that you've gotten so much spam.
ReplyDeleteBut I really really hate word verifications! They seem like the greater of two evils, to me.
It's not like a person has to register to comment. They can select the name/URL option. I don't think you *have* to have a URL in that case, do you?
I think I may have to do something about my own comments as well. I keep getting Japanese spam comments!
ReplyDeleteI really don't like the word verification, but I think it may be the best route to go! I think that because my spammer has a google account! But if your spam is coming in anonymous comments, then just disabling the anon comments would be better (because I think everyone hates typing in those word verification things!)
I don't get any spam, but I have my blog set on private, so I guess that makes a big difference. I hate the word verification too, but I would do that opposed to blocking everybody.
ReplyDeleteI would say the word verification isn't that obnoxious for everyone. If you blog at all, you get used to it. It's more of a pain to create a google account if you don't have one.
ReplyDeleteI don't hate the word verification thing- I think it's better than an inbox filled with spam. But I'm with you on the anonymous comments thing.
ReplyDeleteSadly, I had to revert to word verification for this very reason. But I have a few "loyal" blog readers that only want to use the annonymous function (family members). So I activated the word verification and no one seems to care.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
I was dealing w/ a bunch of Chinese? japanese? Korean? spam on my blog for several weeks. Finally, I deleted the post that they were always commenting on. Makes me wish I'd served my mission in Asia instead of South America!
ReplyDeleteI'd leave the comment option on, just keep a close eye on things.
PS: I got a creepy spammer who joined my Google friend community on my blog, complete w/ a graphic nude pic! I was horrified & felt attacked. Good think Google allows you to block!!
I don't mind word verification at all--a necessary step in the world of spammers.
ReplyDeleteI don't think the word verification is that awful. Annoying, certainly, but I doubt it would keep people from commenting because they have to type in a word.
ReplyDeleteWord verification. Definitely. Helps with the spam and if people have anything to say, they will do it. :)
